Bleeding Rainbow

[[9776]]

Philly’s beloved duo Reading Rainbow is now a full blown rock quartet Bleeding Rainbow. “Yeah Right” is third third full-length. Bleeding Rainbow says, “the sound this time around was more directly influenced by bands from our teenage-hood such as Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Yo La Tengo to name a few.” Mixing hints of Greg Sage’s anthemic, anxiety-ridden punk riffs, with equal parts drone and noise swells reminiscent of Kevin Shields at his most inventive, with an overlaying of boy-girl harmonies, Bleeding Rainbow channels the Mamas and the Papas as if backed by early Smashing Pumpkins.

Xray Eyeballs

[[8135]]

Xray Eyeballs began as the brainchild of guitarist O.J. San Felipe and bassist Carly Rabalais, who, after founding Brooklyn garage-rock juggernaut Golden Triangle (Hardly Art), sought a release that would sate both their sweet-toothed desires and their darker impulses, like a candy-coated Vicodin. Like their musical antecedents The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Velvet Underground, Xray Eyeballs creates a world of their own. Low-lifes, night-walkers, pill-riders, and other sordid characters stalk the band’s New York City streets and their songs compel you to follow them until you find the peace of a night redeemed in the morning light. ‘Spendor Squalor’ is our second lp and is available on vinyl and digital format.s

Zambri

[[7010]]

For Zambri’s debut EP, digital and vinyl + mp3 release, Spin Magazine said, “Sweet pop songwriters who also like to freak out, couching celestial harmonies in skewed synths that sound transmitted from Kate Bush’s womb….There’s no speaking in tongues, per se, but expect plenty of oozy, noisy bits and drum patterns tapped directly from the netherworld….”

Grooms

[[6096]]

On Prom, Grooms’ sophomore album, to be release on the Kanine label July 12th, 2011, the Brooklyn avant-rock trio has come into their own. In every way, Prom is a more mature, unique, adventurous, and most of all, accessible record than 2009′s widely-praised album Rejoicer. To Grooms, this record is about freedom: to be catchy, to be unabashedly pretty, to try entirely new types of music, and even to write their first-ever breakup song. They hope you sing along to Prom, that you get happy and sad to it in the way you do with great pop records, and that you get just a little freaked out when their dark side shows up here and there.

Tracklisting: 1 Tiger Trees 2 Prom 3 Expression Of 4 Imagining the Bodies 5 Skating With Girl 6 Psychics 7 Aisha 8 Into the Arms 9 Sharing 10 Don’t Worry, You’re Prettier 11 3D Voices

Eternal Summers

[[6295]]

Eternal Summers has always had a way with cleverly crafting quick-hitting pop gems. Be it from their debut 10″ or their most recent LP, Silver, their uptempo rhythmics are nothing short on infectious. Our friends at Forest Family Records have teamed up with us to present a short collection of new tracks from our Roanoake sweethearts. The title track from the EP, “Prisoner”, is very likely Eternal Summers at their most lively. The Prisoner EP will hit shelves on April 19th in digital formats – and limited run of 12″ white vinyl.

KR67 4/19/2011

Xray Eyeballs

[[5889]]

Xray Eyeballs is the brainchild of O.J. San Felipe. Gathering fellow Golden Triangle band mate Carly Rabalais (Bass, Vocals) and Jay High (Guitar, ex-Gogogo Airheart), along with Rop Style (Synth, Theremin, Beats, formerly of the famed band Pee Chees), and Allison Press (Drums), they put together a live show that rivals the crowd up into a huge party frenzy, like their fellow garage contemporaries (and buds) King Khan and Black Lips, except it’s carried out with a New-Wave Pop twist. Drawing comparisons to the frantic pop of Jay Reatard and the Urinals, and the moodiness of VelvetUnderground and Jesus and Mary Chain, Xray Eyeballs twist it all into their own pop concoction. Liz Berg from WFMU described their sound as, “fuzzy, over modulated garage pop at a languid trot.” Not Nothing is their debut album.

Dream Diary

[[5136]]

Dream Diary debut album, You are the Beat, reflects the heavy influence the early 90′s indie music scene in Glasgow has on lead singer/guitarist Jacob Sloan. Drawing inspiration from records spanning from The Pastels and The Smiths to Belle & Sebastian, this collection of beautifully arranged and richly orchestrated pop songs was written for the starry-eyed dreamers to dance and make out to. Fans of early Creation and Sarah Records (especially Brighter! Yay Brighter!) will instantly fall in love with Dream Diary’s sweet, bouncy and twee-flavored songs. Available in CD digi and red LP gatefold + mp3s.

Tracklisting: 1. Paper Flowers 2. Is He Really Mine 3. Something Tells Her 4. Bird in My Garden 5. Forever 6. El Lissitzky 7. Young Veronica 8. Tombs of Love 9. She Has a Way 10. Audrey of Spirits

BRAIDS

[[5147]]

With their debut Native Speaker, the young members of BRAIDS have created an album that transcends both their age and geographic location. Raphaelle Standell-Preston (lead vocals, guitar), Austin Tufts (drums, vocals), Katie Lee (keys, vocals) and Taylor Smith (guitar, bass, vocals) have distilled their individual output into minute, minimalist parts and then generated all of their collective sounds into a sweeping, synergistic maelstrom. Meticulously produced by the band, Native Speakeremerges as an extremely potent concoction of playful, lavishly orchestrated and deeply cinematic pieces – all without a sample in sight.

Available in CD wallet and LP + mp3s. Digital release Jan 18, 2011.

Tracklisting: 1. Lemonade 2. Plath Heart 3. Glass Deers 4. Native Speaker 5. Lammicken 6. Same Mum 7. Little Hand

Young Prisms

[[5122]]

Young Prisms album “Friends For Now” comes in digipak CD or gatefold LP + mp3 with translucent dark purple vinyl (even though in the store the sticker says translucent black which is what we were going for, but hey, purple is awesome too). Also super limited yellow cassette run (+mp3s).

For the music, consider this a warning issued with an inviting grin: this music will make you want to drop acid and become a recluse.  Or it will make you jump up and down in a dark crowded room while your eardrums bleed. Or it will make you want to read Sarte, or graphic comic books, or maybe Hunter Thompson. And in one hundred years when people want to know what it felt like to be young on the West Coast in the early new millennium, they might just put on this record.

Tracklisting: 1. Friends For Now 2. If You Want To 3. Sugar 4. Eleni 5. In Your Room 6. All Day Holiday 7. Breathless 8. Feel Fine 9. I Don’t Get Much 10. Stay Awake

Pepper Rabbit

[[4411]]

Pepper Rabbit’s debut album ‘Beauregard’ is to be released October 26th. Vinyl comes with mp3s. Cd is digipak. Musically, Pepper Rabbit might fall between American experimental indie bands like Beirut and Neutral Milk Hotel, but one listen to Beauregard, immediately sets them apart. Weaving banjos, trumpets, warm electric guitars, pianos, ukuleles, pounding drums, clarinets, and the subtle tones of Xander’s voice, Pepper Rabbit constructs complex yet unabashedly pop, mini-masterpieces.

Eternal Summers

[[4223]]

Eternal Summers will detoniate your chill vibe. While you’ve no doubt spent the hot months absorbing ultraviolets and soaking up beach-y sounds, Nicole Yun and Daniel Cundiff have been cutting loose in the back woods, creating their fuzziest, jangliest statement yet: Silver. The album, far-reaching and ambitious despite its minimalist drums-and-guitar cast, mixes 90-second fist-pumpers and dreamy, six-minute meditations, noisy highs, and uncomfortably quiet hums. Capturing the energy of their live shows and calling to mind early indie legends like the Raincoats, Galaxie 500, Beat Happening, and Unrest, they are only partially joking when they call their sound dream punk.

This is the debut album from the Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s own Grooms released on vinyl for the first time. “The ’90s indie rock lashings of Grooms, add a reminder to dust off your Polvo/Sonic Youth LPs(Stereogum)”. Emily and Travis spawned from the Death By Audio scene, where A Place To Bury Strangers’ main frontman, Oliver, runs his pedal business, studio, and all ages loft parties out of. Joined by Jim(previously with Marnie Stern) on drums, Grooms make some of the prettiest music imaginable while leaking out strong 90’s American influences all over the album. Jean on Jean

[[548]]

Molly Schnick’s new project, Jean on Jean is about feelings. When her longtime band Out Hud broke up in 2005, she started from the beginning. She bought audio recording software and a microphone and set about to write songs on cello and guitar that spoke to a time of tremendous change.

The results of her labors are the nine songs that make up the self-titled album Jean on Jean. The sound is warm, lush and orchestrated, like Colin Blunstone’s One Year or Judee Sill’s Heart Food. And like those records, the lyrics are personal, focused on the highs and lows that go along with any major change.

Holy Hail

Having released several EPs and singles, Holy Hail made time between touring across the pond and gigs south of the border to record their debut album “Independent Pleasure Club.” The 11 tracks mix the political activism of Neil Young, the southerness of Leadbelly, the aesthetic of ESG, with the pop sensibility of the Tom Tom Club. Lyrically, the album covers various hot button political issues, including the Iraq War, Hurricane Katrina, the environment.

The album features 11 tracks ranging from synth-pop to electro-folk. Surprisingly, a French website said it best, when they claimed Chairlift is “just as at home in a David Lynch film as in the aisles of a supermarket.” You can’t find it in either yet, but here’s hoping.

Monsters Are Waiting

[[536]]

Formed in 2005, Los Angeles based band Monsters are Waiting released their self-titled EP in October of that same year, following up with a full-length album titled “Fascination” in July of 2006. Now, Monsters Are Waiting is returning with their second EP, “Ones and Zeros.”

NME has called Monsters Are Waiting “majestic, Metric-style haunt-rock – monster munching our stereo in the process,” and the combination of Annalee Fery’s innocent, floaty voice and Andrew Clark’s jangly guitar licks has been called “haunting and authentic” by All Music Guide and “elegant without being polished” by LA Weekly. Monsters Are Waiting is expressive without being idiosyncratic, atmospheric, airy, and ambient, blending indie pop with elements of shoegaze and a little bit of a new wave sound.

Tracklisting: 1. Crazy Love 2. Don’t Lie 3. Ones and Zeros 4. It’s Endless 5. I Wanna Be Adored (Stones Roses cover) 6. Steal the Sun

Shock Cinema

[[414]]

Returning one year later, with nine new songs coming out under the moniker “Hell and Highwater,” Shock has created an atmospheric soundscape for the high seas. If the debut was ” a rash, clashing, noisily-engineered post-punk gnasher” (Big Takeover) flying by at break-neck punk speed, the follow up is more deliberate and varied, allowing you to take a breath and soak in everything on the horizon. Heave ho!

Northern State

[[534]]

Northern State has been busy recording a new full length, their third. While recording, the girls reported from the studio, “We’ve been writing some rock songs and some hip hop songs and some other kinds of songs. We have been doing an unprecedented amount of singing, and we are no longer allowed to hold writing sessions at the Rodeo Bar. We have either lost our mind completely or we are making the best record of our career. You decide.” Well, we here at Kanine decided, it’s their best yet – and we picked two songs that typify the “other kinds of songs” or their “new direction” and pressed it onto some beautiful black VINYL complete with colorful jacket. The A side contains two tracks off their upcoming third full length album and the B side contains exclusive remixes. This will be limited, get it now!

Mixel Pixel

[[544]]

This is a vinyl 12? single – the second single from the upcoming album. As the most straightforward and upbeat track, Coming Up X’s screamed for the remix treatment. Female Pixel Kaia Wong throws aside her keyboard and steps up from her backing vocal duties to provide lead vocals – resulting in a Blondie-esque dance floor hit. The remixes range from the electtro-weirdness of Poingly to Alan Astor’s lounge-ified mix. Books on Tape re-imagines the song with breakbetas, while Streetlab provides the track with a dancefloor kick.. A must have for DJs and fans!

Professor Murder

[[522]]

Professor Murder’s sound is as informed by hip-hop, bootleg mixtapes, downloaded mp3s and club nights, as it is by 70s and 80s post-punk. In early 2005 the band nixed the guitar from their line-up which pushed them to rethink their music from the ground up. Their aim was to create a sound that distilled the many disparate soundtracks to their lives in New York City. The result, as captured with the help of the production duo The Brothers, is a rythm-heavy dance sound littered with reggae, funk, and hip-hop. After you pick up the album, you’ll want to check them out live – it’s one big dance party!

Tracklisting: X Side: 1. Champion 2. Pedigree 3. The Mountain 4. Camron’s New Color (Pt. 3) 5. Free Stress Test

[[1305]]

This is the first single from their forthcoming LP, Music For Plants, due out later this year. Along with “You’re The Kind of Girl”, a boy-meets-girl trip hop jamboree, the single includes 3 exclusive B-Sides: “What Are You Wearing?,” a playful take on a Momus song, “Personal Space Invaders,” an instrumental outtake which could easily be theme music for a cowboy movie in outer space, and “My Animal,” a song from Rainbow Panda, remixed by Poingly.

Mommy and Daddy

[[538]]

After releasing their EP Fighting Style Killer Panda earlier this year, the curiously named duo Mommy and Daddy is quickly sapping the demand for more with the full length Duel at Dawn. Continuing where their EP left off, their punk-party sound is laced with sing-a-long choruses, mini-intervals of shouting and the catchy clap along interludes that force you to smile and shake. Duel at Dawn, however, also has a slightly darker edge, heightening the dirtiness, the intensity of the vocals, and the fuzzy, jagged base lines, quickly proving that their music is infectious, eccentric, and difficult to turn off. For fans of: Le Tigre, PiL, The Faint or Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Oxford Collapse

[[524]]

A Good Ground is Oxford Collapse expanding its skies, deepening its tracks, and discovering their peers. The music has taken on elements of what could only be called Americana — though it’s the hazier Americana heard on a circa-’85 Meat Puppets or R.E.M. record as opposed to the term’s more recent connotations. Much of the album’s spent in a cascading territory, drumbeats as propulsion; the ideal soundtrack for a long drive with the windows down and the sun in your eyes. A Good Ground finds Pace delivering his vocals with a newfound strength, and the addition of Rizer enriches the vocal department even further.

Tracklisting: 1. Empty Fields 2. Prop Cars 3. Last American Virgin 4. The Boys Go Home 5. Dusty Horses Practice 6. Cracks in the Causeway 7. Flora Y Fauna 8. Proofreading 9. Flaws 10. No Great Shakes 11. Volunteers 12. Keep ‘Em In A Canyon

Mixel Pixel

[[546]]

Contact Kid Mixel Pixel use obscure video game samples and sublime lyricism making a unique electro-folk style that pushes the envelope of popular music. The Mixel Pixel sound is, at its core, electronic, punky, paranoid, and half-Japanese; an overall by-product of growing up in the 1980’s. It is irreverently experimental, with its hot pink ghetto blasting beats, quirky guitar changes, folk interludes and imagist lyrics. Live they incorporate video projection for an overall visual and aural experience that completely envelops the audience. For fans of: The Unicorns, The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Atari Video Games

Rockethouse is loud, distorted rock featuring ex-members of the amazing Aerial Love Feed…With a sound that calls to mind such legendary bands as Primal Scream, Jesus and Mary Chain and newcomers Kasabian, “WMD” is sure to leave its mark in 2005. The music, blending electronics, samples, pulsating rhythms, and a wall of guitar sound, is noisy, dynamic and ominous, but not without hope.

Mommy and Daddy

[[540]]

Mommy and Daddy is the super electro-punk duo from the streets of NYC! Their sound is the bastard child of the Misfits meets the B-52’s… Their formula is simple: when she sings and pushes buttons, he plays bass guitar; when he sings and hits the machine, she is on bass. The driving pummeling bass, accompanied by maniacal keyboard driven beats makes for some of the most cunning punk rock last heard from the likes of Blondie or the Buzzcocks.

Grizzly Bear

[[554]]

Horn of Plenty is a nostalgic amalgamation of found sounds and layered vocals bound to thrill followers of Animal Collective, Sufjan Stevens, Nick Drake and the Unicorns. While the album pushes the boundaries of mellow into undiscovered territory, Grizzly Bear is not sure if they fall under the newly coined “freak-folk” category or hte new-folk genre, but they’d like to offer up wood-temp or cave-core. V Magazine likened them to Neil Young on cough syrup.

The Izzys

[[65]]

“The Izzys don’t sound over-produced through a Casio -keyboard like Casablancas and his colleagues, and have more technical respect to their musical roots. The three-piece band, fronted by principal singer-songwriter Mike Storey , … and there’s no denying it – The Izzys is the best Rolling Stones album released in the last twenty or so years, and Sir Mick and Keith are nowhere near it…. This is thirty-one minutes of instant, refined rock and roll that feels stolen from a lost age.” CD Music (UK)

Oxford Collapse

[[528]]

“It’s almost too tempting to play on Oxford Collapse’s name — the Brooklyn trio’s debut album,…, possesses more than one glorious, twitchy moment where breakdowns will, most assuredly, break out on the dancefloor. But the band’s skill, and what makes Some Wilderness one of 2004’s standout releases (it comes out April 14), lies in their know-how when it comes to pasting all those pieces back together again.” City Paper (Philadelphia)

“Firstly, they have an early 80s post punk sound mixed up with a DC-ish type groove that really rocks along, a squlechy bass sound blends in with frolicking guitars and exuberant vocals…And they have this overwhelmingly danceable feel, very rhythmical and enjoyable, I should reckon they are a dashed fine live band. Kind of schizophrenic too, which is never a bad thing.” Collective Zine(Philadelphia)

The Flesh

[[408]]

“Somewhere in between the sleek production of the Rapture and Radio 4 and the all out mania of Electric 6, lies the Flesh. Deliciously lo-fi and extremely danceable, this band makes rock music with unbridled sensuality. They even make the organ sound sexy. There’s a dark undercurrent though, a slightly gothic leaning if you will. In fact, it is quite possible that the Flesh is the illegitimate love child of Robert Smith and glam era Bowie, and though I’m sure the band members will cringe at the application of any label, THIS is disco punk.” Filter Magazine
