MORE ABOUT THE VIDEO:
Together or Alone exemplifies Japhy Riddle’s signature style, using practical effects and found objects to create a world more like our own than we think. The inventive stop-motion animation takes place on two sets, contrasting the mossy textures of the forest floor with the vast quiet of space. The protagonist (who is made of doll parts and dried flowers) travels from endless night, curling trees, and shimmering gears to a bustling domain where he must assume a disguise to work amongst his peers. The tiny hero’s journey comments on our ritual practice of fitting in, suggesting that when the mask slips, so might our perception—as we find we’re more together than alone.
